A Bit About Us

Our Mission...

is to give recognition, value, and respect to the weavings and weavers of San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala. This begins by ensuring the weavers receive a fair price for their craft. The women that partner with us receive income twice for each of their weavings.  First, through the original sale to MayaWeavings and then again when a weaving is sold from this website. The weaver and her cooperative gain an additional 20% of the sales price:  17% to the weaver and 3% to the Cooperative.

Guatemala is a small country still emerging from a brutal civil war that left more than 70% of the surviving indigenous Maya living in poverty and 70% of their children with malnutrition. Despite the pogrom, despite the poverty, the weaving continues and yes, strengthens. The formation of women's weaving cooperatives has given Maya women unprecedented power and choice in their lives and the ability to create opportunities for their families.  When women control more of the household income it is the children who benefit through increased spending on nutrition and education.  And so the entire community prospers.

Your purchase extends deeply.  Thank you.

*Just a Heads Up...

Most of our weavings are completely unique - which means there is only 1.  If you see an item with the price crossed out and sold next to it that means, sob, it's gone. However, the weavers will create custom orders and for exorbitant fees (about $30) I can ship from Guatemala.  All weavings displayed on this website are shipped from the US.  Contact us for more information on special orders.
